The Last of Their Kind: Germany’s Treasury of Old Vine Riesling
The power, pride and potential of old vines. And it turns out, the Mosel really could be where it all started..
We’ve been dreaming up this volume for ages. The Mosel — river, valley, people, wines. All are objects of enduring fascination.
A sense of the ancient remains tangible. Celts and Romans made this place home, long before the Germani. Yet, the origins of German wine are no less palpable in the heroism, imagination, scrappiness, and courage of growers we celebrate today.
And, as we write, courage is the keyword. In late April, frost bit hard across Germany and Austria, especially in the Mosel. Some growers estimate crop losses of up to 100% among certain varieties and vineyards. It is a bitter start to vintage ‘24.
So, in Volume 19, we hold the Mosel close.
This starts with our cover illustration, The River, the work of acclaimed writer and artist Meg Maker. Then Senior Correspondent Christoph Raffelt delivers an in-depth feature on the thrilling rise of Mosel Pinot Noir. Rainer Schäfer explores a corner of the Saar insiders try hard to keep for themselves. Paula and Valerie visit the Ruwer and report on new developments from the left and right banks. Norwegian chef and wine writer Håvard Flatland makes his TRINK debut recalling a transformative October when he got his hands dirty with Weingut Weiser-Künstler in Traben-Trarbach.
With this volume, you will notice a shift in our approach to publishing: We are releasing articles more frequently, outside of the volume structure. We know you count on TRINK for big think pieces and long form stories. But also for breaking news and developments. Rolling out content regularly keeps you closer to what’s happening in the world of German-speaking wines.
This does not mean that we are stopping the themed quarterly volumes we offer as a counterpoint to the day-to-day disposable, digital landscape.
Rather, we’ll publish articles individually, but collect them over time in a new volume. Be sure you are signed up for our free newsletter and follow our social channels to be the first to know.
