When I arranged to meet H.O. Spanier of Weingut Battenfeld Spanier, one of Germany’s leading growers, in the Zellertal, he wrote to me: “Zellertal is probably one of Germany’s most dynamic regions. I began investing in its most limestone-rich sites 30 years ago.” Since then, interest in the Zellertal has built gradually. But in the past few years, that interest has exploded. Spanier has played a major role in this, as has the world-renowned father-son winemaking duo Klaus Peter and Felix Keller of Weingut Keller. Both estates are now significantly invested in Zellertal vineyards. There was no question their moves…
As a former importer, speaker, writer, organizer of events, wine tours and wine-focused walking holidays, Gerd Brabant has gained exceptional first-hand experience within the German wine world. Together with Marc Roovers, he is the co-author of Wijnland Duitsland, a comprehensive Dutch-language book on German wine. Gerd’s next book is due out in 2027: an in-depth wine travel guide to nine German wine regions. His greatest passion is exploring wine regions on foot.
The 45-kilometer Zellertalweg hiking trail runs through the heart of the Zellertal [ADD LINK]. I have created a loop trail that builds off a longer path and can be divided into several stages. It takes in the best-known vineyards and some of the most interesting sights featured in my forthcoming wine travel guide to Germany. For me, this is the most beautiful part of the Zellertal, naturally including the Schwarzer Herrgott in both the Pfalz and Rheinhessen. As my route diverges from the Zellertalweg at several points, use this downloadable GPX file to navigate. (Works with any standard phone-based hiking…...
For the longest time, Sekt was a dirty word. It stood for bottles of inexpensive, easy fizz with obnoxious plastic corks to be found on the street, next to the debris of spent fireworks, on New Year’s Day. Leftovers from high jinks and cheap thrills the night before. But that was then. Today, Sekt’s star is once again on the rise. We cannot even say that it is returning to its former glory because the story of German Sekt today is unprecedented and, quite literally, effervescent. It was the 20th century that destroyed with consummate efficiency what was once so promising, so frivolous,…...
Mason Washington wants to set himself apart in the wine world. He’s convinced his German identity is the ticket. The 24-year-old digital media marketer grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina, a small city in the American south that Washington charitably describes as being “what you make of it.” It was an unlikely place for a young Black man to be raised in a German family. But his grandmother Ingrid, a native of Berlin, and his mother, Carmen, born in Munich, were just that. “The biggest thing for me is the German heritage on my mom’s side,” says Washington. Now, he’s digging into…...
